THE USAGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON TIME MANAGEMENT

Time management is the discipline of using one’s personal time effectively. It is an important tool used to control and direct the effort needed on tasks. Nowadays, social media represent one of the most popular mean of communication to manage the relationship with their targets. However, the way people use social media can have a negative impact. The target audience in this issue are college students, since they tend to be most active users on social media.

The purpose of this blog is to highlight the problem of time management while using social media and how it affects college students’ personal life, as well as their academic achievement. This issue sparked my interest since I can relate to it. I believe it is important to raise awareness regarding this topic since many students are not aware enough of the consequences, whereas others might find it challenging to change their behavior when it comes manage their time or they do not have a rigid plan to follow.

My View

As exams approach, college students are more likely to experience an excessive level of stress. Time management is a crucial strategy used in order to assess and prioritize responsibilities for a simple and favorable result. However, with the consistent use of social media, students have less chance to balance and execute tasks and other chores productively. In this short essay, I will briefly discuss how time management can affect students’ academic achievement in addition to other several aspects of this issue.

Nowadays, most contents are accessible through social media, whether it is related to a student’s general interest or studies, social platforms offer an adequate amount of information as a means to grasp a better understanding of the matter. Nonetheless, the time spent on social media can have a negative impact on students’ academic performance.

According to Macan, Shihani, Dipboye, and Phillips (1990), an important relationship was found between time management and academic achievement and stress. In other words, their hypothesize underlined a positive relationship between personal time management behavior of students and their academic performance which was reflected on their GPA. For instance, the more students are able to manage their time effectively the better they performed academically and vice versa. As a result, the degree of stress experienced would normally be bound to rise up.

Another study illustrated that students who suffered more with time management had performed significantly poor in academic achievement (Nasrullah & Khan, 2015). It has also showed that students with insufficient time management skills scored a below average score in academic achievement. Besides the negative effects that social media have on student’s academic performance, it can alter our perception of reality, and affect our health as well.

One of the most important aspect is related to health. Due to a poor time management colleges student will undoubtedly undergo major changes. The latter include stress and frustration (Duncan, n.d.). When a student is not able to lead and follow a useful plan, stress can accumulate as a result, he or she might experience unpleasant outcomes such as, high blood pressure, anxiety and heart disease (Duncan, n.d.). which leaves us with the idea that the more the student is exposed to a prolonged time of stress the worse symptoms get. Furthermore, sleep is also perceived as one of the aspects that it is affected by time management. Usually, when a busy schedule arises the more comprises needed to be done.

Unfortunately, good time management can be very challenging to execute and maintain to a certain level. Several factors can be related this undesirable impact such as, undefined goals, procrastination, fragile sense of time, inability to focus on priorities, and disorganization (Bill, 2016).

Finally, it may be conclued that a poor time management has been linked to an excessive use of social media. Furthermore, we can safely assume that an inerlinked system will be affected. The latter includes, academic achievement as well as several aspects of a student’s personal life. For istance, a decrease in sociability, and productivity might emerge.

I hope my blog has helped you to understand the importance of time management and maybe take an action to enhance the outcome since finals are at the door.

What the Experts Say II

  • Talaue, AlSaad, AlRushaidan, AlHugail, and AlFahhad (2018) described the influence of social media on academic performance among college students in Jubail, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Talaue et al. (2018) further described two different outcomes of social media usage in studies. First, according to several studies, the result of social media use on academic performance was positive. Students who use social media for their academic work had a more favorable outcome since their interaction made it easier for them to share their notions and thoughts. Additionally, it has enhanced the communication between students and educators in order to comprehend the course material. However, it was not advised during class time. All of these findings were highlighted from previous concepts and literate review Second, their results served to accentuate on the fact that although social media has become a major part of students’ time, it has a negative effect on their academic performance since it can interfere with a healthy physical and intellectual development.

  • Both of the posts of what the experts say discuss the impact of social media usage on time management and academic performance amongst different population of college students. The first article interprets a research conducted in Nigeria. In addition, the second article explains also the effect of social media on academic performance of business students in Saudi Arabia.

What the Experts Say I

According to Echekwu (2014), the purpose of the study was to explain the influence of the use of social media on time management among college students in Zaria, Nigeria. The participants included 735 male, and 589 female students. The researcher opted for two distinct type of assessments, the Social Media Usage Questionnaire and Time Management Questionnaire. Based on the results, the research displayed a significant negative relationship between time management and utilization of social media among the sampled population in Zaria. This article targets specifically college students in Nigeria, saying that most of Nigerian students are so immersed in the usage of social media that they became addicted and lost interest in their studies. Subsequently, this behavior has affected their academic performance as well their psychological well-being.

Current Events I

Although there are not many current events happening that discuss the effect of social media use on time management among college students, I thought it would be more convenient to relate this issue to a different feature such as films.

A film is a visual art that is used to stimulate experiences that communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, and feelings. Since my theme examines the issue of time management among college students, I tried to associate it with fictional characters that are going through the problem of procrastination (Suchland, and Roberts, 2011).

The first movie, “With Honors” (1994) directed by Alek Keshishian describes a misfortunate series of a student who has lost all of his senior thesis work because of a guy who has taken it hostage. As you can imagine the horror and stress that Monty is going through can be very overwhelming.

The second movie, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986) directed by John Hughes illustrates the life of a wealthy young man who spends most of time avoiding schoolwork. This portrayal focuses on his procrastination, yet he is seen as an inspiring person.

The third movie, “The breakfast Club” (1985), directed by John Hughes pictures a group of high school students who were grouped to write an essay as a punishment. Despite that they have kept distracting themselves by dancing and discussing philosophical ideas related to the future. That is another level of procrastination.

The fourth movie, “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” (1989) directed by Stephen Herek highlights how two high school students Bill, and Ted who are close to failing high school if they do not finish their history project. However, instead of focusing on their work they used a time traveling phonebooth and an educator named Rufus to accompany them on their journey to success.

Finally, the last movie “Risky Business” directed by Paul Brickman narrates the life of a student named Joel Goodson who is going through a daring journey with his business in honor of the group student Future Enterprises.

As mentioned above, the 5 movies somehow depicted the problem of time management among students.
